This month, John Zachman hands over this space to his son who takes us on a trip through the rich history of the evolution of 'The Zachman Framework'. In this, the first of a two-part series, John P. Zachman covers the early years of The Framework, beginning in 1984.

The Zachman Framework (ZF) has started the studies in EA. ZF provides an effective meta-model for large scale information systems by means of a set of architectures.

As to the Zachman Framework that should be represented here, I say we stick to the three types: "Information Systems Architecture Framework" (667 / 43) "Zachman Framework for Enterprise Architecture" (25 / 54) "Zachman Enterprise Framework" (259 / 3) These types have severe coverage in third party sources, and this is what we need to represent. The Zachman Framework is a method of organizing architectural artifacts. It is usually depicted like this: I have never found this diagram to be particularly intuitive. It is helpful to think of the levels in terms of the intended audience: I also find the Why, How, What thing to be less than clear. The Zachman Framework is an ontology which helps to create the structure rather than a methodology which provides the transforming process.

The Zachman Framework for Enterprise Architecture, an update of the 1987 original in the 1990s extended and renamed . This newly revised four day seminar and workshop, based on the recently released Zachman Framework V3.0, for the first time incorporates actual modelling experience. The modelling workshop is based on actual Enterprise experience and is designed to give the participants hands-on experience creating both “Primitive” (architecture) models as well as “Composite” (implementation) models.

The Framework for Enterprise Architecture (the “Zachman Framework”) is a normalized schema, one (meta) fact in one place.

The Zachman Frame work defines thirty six different perspectives. It is expected that these perspective will cover all viewpoints needed by anyone in the organisation. It includes technical viewpoint about the architecture as well as logistic details about how and where it will be implemented and by whom.

To go back to the previous level, you may click on the link at the top of Zachman Framework. Cells with sub-level added will have their background painted. The columns in the Zachman framework represent different areas of interest for each perspective. The columns describe the dimensions of the systems development effort.

Don’t add or change the Rows or Columns or you will denormalize it and it will cease to be a good analytical tool. The Framework is a semantic structure.

In general, it seems that the Zachman framework has reached the Although the Zachman Framework applies to enterprises, the Framework itself is generic. It is a comprehensive, logical structure for the descriptive representations (i.e., models or design artefacts) of any complex object, and it does not prescribe or describe any particular method, representation technique, or automated tool.

The Zachman framework is a template for organizing architectural artifacts (in other words, design documents, specifications, and models) that takes into account both the artifact targets (for example, business owners and system builders) and the particular issue that is being addressed (for

A quick guide to the Zachman framework The Zachman Framework uses 36 categories for describing anything from products, to services, to hardware and software. Categories are organized in six rows by six columns, forming a two-dimensional Zachman likens ISA to a “periodic table” for information entities, providing a classification scheme for information entities, allowing different entities to be combined to provide different views of an information system. The Zachman Framework isn’t exactly a methodology, at least not in the way most IT management frameworks are, mainly because it doesn’t offer specific processes for handling data. 2.
